2024 selection: Switzerland (winner), Croatia (real winner) and Netherlands
Switzerland - The Code - Nemo
In a dark stage, a young person climbs and balances on a big metallic moving disc. In the most intense parts, some spare white lights simulate fast rotating movement. The person has short curly hair, a large, fluffy pink and white coat, and a pink ballet skirt and collants.
Long description
Close-up to the back of a young person who quickly turns around to us. They gesture with an arm showing us the stage, and invites us closer with their other hand, as they then walk around a big structure chained to the ceiling and come back to us.
As the pre-chorus starts, he pants as he climbs and balances on a large metallic disk, posed diagonally like a giant spinner toy. At the highest point, the disc descends to the floor with Nemo, and the other side goes up like a seesaw..
Nemo lies on the disc and sits again. As they sing "I broke the code", the left and right part of his face are lighted up, alternatedly.
When the song intensifies, Nemo is up at the highest edge of the disc and it starts rotating, lights swiping behind him simulating even faster movement. Nemo sings passionately with open arms.
Croatia - Rim Tim Tagi Dim - Baby Lasagna
Long description:
A drummer beats his sticks against each other as the camera zooms out. The screen shows colorful neon lights. A male dancer lifts and lowers a travel suitcase and a female dancer shakes a laceworked napkin in the air. Their clothes look old-fashioned but their makeup is a harcore metal, with black eyeliner. The vocalist as well, with his black eyeliner and spiky blond hair. His wide ballon-ish sleeved shirt is fully white and laceworked, and he uses a noble red waistcoat over it.
During the song, everyone seems very enthralled and passionate, giving it their all. At a point, they start a very silly dance: standing still with serious faces, they raise and lower a bended right arm, pointing up for 8 times; then turn left and do the same with both arm and leg. It feels like a galloping motion, matching the 3D horse sillourette on the background screen that appears sometimes.
At the end, the singer comes near the audience and energically spurs an imaginary horse as he gallops on his feet in a wide squat.
Netherlands - Europapa - Joost Klein
A silly smile of pure joy gleams in the nordic singer's face. On the screen behind, we read "europapa" and other bits of the lyrics as they show up, a retro 90s typefont in the EU flag colors. He wears an extravagant blue suit with full pointy shoulders and dances very theatrically. Everyone and the screen match the european flag with its blue and yellow colors and star symbols.
Long description:
An above view shows a poorly animated, silly cartoonish stretched face on the stage floor.
Then, it cuts to the real singer, who excitedly closes his eyes waves to the camera with a big silly grin. He wears a an extravagant deep blue suit, like the European flag, and he maintains this childlike wonder as he joins his hands together or bops his waist. Throughout the song he is very theatrical. The screen behind shows retro pictures and animations like rotating CDs or european food dishes. In the chorus it displays "europa" and "papapa" with a retro 90s typefont, in yellow and blue like the flag.
At some point it gets very flashy and intense as they dance like there's no tomorrow.
End: All the lights go out except two beams pointing at him. He stays still and looks tired now, as he calmy sings. The screen reads "from: me. to: my parents." and fades out.
